In the good old days books were the main sources of knowledge. A good reader was undoubtedly more knowledgeable than others. Our new generation is exposed to audio and visual media. These exhibits have reduced learning time. Computers have sharpened the reflexes of our next-generation variety. The introduction of audio and video techniques in educational institutions has increased the gap in the thinking faculties of the older and younger generations. In addition to the immense benefits of technological progress, it has also led to some serious social problems. The most acute problem is the behavior of our younger generation with the elderly. I will endeavor to highlight some of the problem areas and suggest guidelines, based on my observations, for the younger generation to overcome in the prevailing environment.
Young people generally complain of boredom and frustration in the company of older people. It has been observed that when the elders begin any narrative, the young person anticipates the conclusion. The elders continue to explain their point of view. This is due to the intellectual gap developed between them. The fast pace of modern inventions is likely to widen the gap even further. Under such circumstances, young people must realize that they are being raised in an environment where modern technology has entered their daily routine. At this stage, it is difficult for older people to begin to learn the handling of modern devices, the implementation of modern management concepts and follow the new diagnostic techniques. They must grant them this latitude and yet give their elders due consideration and respect and give them a patient audience. In view of the great exposure and the higher level of intelligence, young people must demonstrate more maturity and tolerance. They should participate politely in the conversation without making them feel the great gap in understanding and assimilation. They should not abandon them, as this gesture would seriously hurt their feelings and could even turn them into psychopaths. In our social setting, the elderly in the family remain an asset. They act as a cushion and blessing at different stages of life. Although the older generation cannot contribute much materially, its usefulness in the family cannot be denied. Old age is said to be the second childhood in life. Everyone has to grow old one day and become dependent on children. Time passes quickly especially if one tells the past events of our elders. The good behavior of the younger generation towards their elders serves as an example for the young. This aspect of youth training is extremely important in keeping our traditional family ties intact.
Some individuals, especially the elderly, gradually develop slow reflexes in their thoughts and actions. This older trend creates problems when interacting with the new generation. They react if the young people do not respond according to their desire. The younger generation must remember that it is difficult to mend the old habits of the elderly. Therefore, today’s youth, being smarter and sharper, should take a more low-key approach. They should listen to them patiently and courteously without getting into serious arguments and disagreements. However, they must meet these challenges using their own judgment and skills. For the advancement of the nation, a great responsibility falls on our younger generation. They must show more tolerance in this age of transition. However, seniors should extend full cooperation to their younger generation by making use of the latest scientific technology, diagnostic procedures, and modern business and management techniques. Young people must remember that, in our social environment, the elderly will always prove to be an asset in creating better harmony and maintaining traditional family structures. A well-united family will provide great security for the new generation to fully dedicate their time and energy to benefit from modern technologies and put the nation on the path of progress.
This smooth transition requires greater maturity and tolerance for the overall progress of the nation. Remember that former colleagues and bosses are on their way out and the future is yours.
